Office Depot has launched a new electronic commerce site for office
supplies in Japan through its wholly owned subsidiary, Viking Office Products.
This new Web site in Japan incorporates many innovative features
including Quick Order by Stock Number, which enables customers to enter
catalog orders online and Supplies QuickFind, which helps customers
identify the correct supplies for their business machines. It also
functions on real-time inventory, keeping track of what is actually
available and in stock.
The new Internet site will take advantage of the Company's existing
infrastructure including merchandising, warehousing and distribution. This is Viking's fifth
International Web site to be opened.
As of June 24, 2000, the Office Depot operated 855 office supply
superstores in the United States and Canada, 27 office supply stores in
France and seven stores in Japan. In addition the company had mail order and delivery operations
in 14 countries outside of the United States and Canada, and under joint
venture and licensing agreements, had 89 additional stores operating
under the Office Depot name in six other foreign countries.
