AMAZON.COM DELIVERS ON CHRISTMAS DAY, BUT AT WHAT COST TO THEIR CUSTOMER'S
NERVES?
----------------------------------------------------------
Amazon.com shipped over 31 million items between Nov 2nd and December
23rd. A special arrangement with the USPS enabled the company to complete
deliveries even on Christmas Day.
Despite getting 99% of items out on time, the company showed signs of
reduced customer service, at least on one order we placed over the holiday
period. The order was placed on December 7th and the confirmation showed
shipping within 24 hours. The order was still showing as waiting to
process on Dec 23rd. Email requests to customer service went unanswered as
we waited to see if the items would be shipped in time to arrive for
Christmas.

MARKET TRENDS 2001
----------------------------------------------------------
Our predictions for 2001 in online retailing:
-
As eRetailers increase
prices on products in an attempt to recover margins and reach
profitability, many shoppers find the Internet is not always less
expensive than shopping in stores.
-
Following widely reported
issues with delivery, consumers are becoming reluctant to shop online
for holiday gifts, preferring instead the certainty of traditional
store purchases. Companies with delivery guarantees and outstanding
service will reap the rewards.
-
Shoppers are turning to
respected click and mortar retailers for their online needs, knowing
they can return merchandise to local stores if they need to. Strong
offline brands will continue to win online market share.
